Deadly stun gun disguised as iPhone found on 14-year-old boy

Manchester, England: The officer was searching a 14-year-old boy accused of racially abusing a bus driver when the device went off

An iPhone discovered by police searching a 14-year-old turned out to be a powerful stun gun.

The seemingly innocent device had been converted to the deadly weapon and gave the officer involved an electric shock as he confiscated it from the teenager.

The illegal device, which emits a powerful electric shock, was found after police searched the boy in Manchester city centre.

It was found when the schoolboy, who has not been identified, was arrested alongside three other teenagers after a bus driver complained he was subjected to vile racist taunts.

The boy was also found to have a knife.

The device - a rare discovery in Manchester - is expected to be sent away for analysis to determine how powerful it is.           

Sgt Phil Marsh told the Manchester Evening News: “It has the appearance of a black iPhone but the volume buttons are more prominent.

"The top has a silver strip with two points from which the current is discharged.

"The volume buttons appear to activate the device. People need to be aware that possession of them is an offence under the Firearms Act.”

The four boys, the 14-year-old, one aged 16 and two aged 17, have all been bailed pending further investigations.

Police were called to Portland Street after the bus driver reported a ‘hate incident’.

The 14-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, possession of a bladed article and a racially-aggravated public order offence.

The other three were held on suspicion of racially-aggravated public order offences, with one also held on suspicion of possession of drugs, believed to be cannabis.

Stun-gun phones are largely made in China and can be bought over the internet for just £15.

They are marketed as personal protection devices capable of discharging a blast of up to 50,000 volts. They can cause fatal heart attacks.
