Nairobi, Kenya: Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo has admitted that the country has a shortfall of 70,000 teachers.

The minister said he will be seeking for a supplementary budget early next year to recruit more teachers to ease the shortage.

He was speaking during a graduation ceremony of more than 200 diploma and certificate Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) graduands at Oasis centre in Sultan Hamud, Makueni County.

Mutula said the Government is committed to the development of ECDE which he said is the foundation of education.

He said the ECDE teachers must be recruited and paid by the TSC which he directed to develop a scheme of service for them.

The minister appreciated that the ECDE has been entrenched in the current constitution as opposed to the old one which never mentioned the word education anywhere.
