Alluring entryway

Interior décor
An elegant console gives the space an appealing look.

It sets the scene for your home, the point at which you say hallo to your guests. It also introduces your personal style. No matter the size or shape of your foyer, use these easy steps to create a welcoming entry. Consider style, colour and the kind of mood you intend to create for that first impression. When done right, a foyer should exude warmth and comfort; it should welcome friends and family. Here is how:

Mirror: This is a natural addition to your entryway. It is always good to take one last look at ourselves before we leave the house. It’s thus a good idea to include a when decorating a foyer. A full length one would be great but if not, hang the small one over the table or shelf at the foyer. Mirrors open up the space and reflect light and works best with small foyers as it makes it look large. For best impact, place it strategically opposite a beautiful view like a wall hanging.

A mirror is a natural addition to your foyer.

Light: Most foyers do not naturally have light, thus lighting it is a must. Your foyers should have adequate lighting. Have a chandelier or overhead fixture as a grand focal point to make a statement. You could also have another light source like having a table lamp. It would be more interesting to have dimmer switches so that you can adjust the intensity of the lighting depending on the event. For special occasions, use candles, but ensure you observe safety even as you light them.

A bench would be ideal if you have ample space.

Rug/runner: A rug is an absolute must. Let your guests have a soft landing (literally) when they step into your house by having an area rug or runner on the foyer. Place in such a way that it does not obstruct the opening of the door. It should also be of good quality to handle the constant traffic through the space and also blend with the main colours in the space. Try, however, to pick a dark colour that will not show dirt easily. The rug keeps dirt off your clean floors and also warms up the entryway area. For a better appeal, ensure it is wider than your front door.

Shoe area: Get a rack or designated mat where guests can put their shoes once they remove them. A unique shoe rack would be more ideal, otherwise, place a mat that will define the spot where shoes can be placed so that they are not all over the floor.

Furniture: Foyers have limited space and as such let it stay simple. A console table, desk or chest of drawers will keep your foyer looking organised. It frees up the floor space and creates simple elegance. This is where you can place the table lamp, framed photos, a beautiful glass bowl and a vase of flowers, among other items, for a unique touch. Place any interesting object on the table so that they become conversation pieces.

A soft landing for your guests

Colour: For a dramatic entrance, paint an accent wall or use wallpaper to define the space and works with your overall home décor. Soft colours will offer an airy feeling, while dark colours will trick the eye into seeing a vast space in this small space. If you use patterned wall paper, keep the décor simple so that the space does not look too busy.

Art: From paintings to family portraits, art can be a primary element in a foyer. Get photos that pick the style of your home.

Seating area: If your foyer has ample space, add a bench or a few accent chairs. If you have space for two chairs, place them on either side of a table. This is a great way to add seating space and give the foyer a homey feel.

Use cushions to tie in accent colours.

• Add a coat rack or put some hooks on the wall where guests can hang their coats and bags. The hooks can also be used to store hats, scarves, and other accessories.

• An umbrella stand is a great idea if you’ve got the space. There are a lot of really nice ones available on the market and they can add a nice decorative element. It’ll also help make sure you never lose your umbrella.

• A specific place to put keys and other items is necessary. Get an attractive basket, box where you will easily locate your items.

• Get creative and get an umbrella stand that has an artistic appeal to enhance your décor.

A foyer is, however, most comfortable when only a few objects are asking for attention. Do not overcrowd it.
