I first came to Nairobi in 2012. I did not know what to expect in East Africa, but I was humbled by the humility with which I was welcomed.
I was shocked to find out that most Kenyans recognise my work. Do you know how hard it is to get a live audience to laugh? You can imagine the joy of finding out that people have watched me online and liked my work.
I remember cracking a joke about disability. Although it got people laughing, I did get some backlash as well.
The highlight of my visit was actually underscored by my return to Nigeria. That’s when I knew that as much as Nairobians are humble, they can be twice as mean when rattled. Someone hacked my Twitter account and started insulting Kenyans.
I did not go online for awhile and when I did, the damage was far-reaching. It took time to convince my Kenyan fans that I was not the one posting those insults.
After all, you do not bite the hand that feeds you!
