Shilling holds steady against the dollar

The shilling was unchanged against the dollar yesterday, as caution set in due to the euro zone crisis and concerns the Central Bank could sell dollars to cut volatility. Commercial banks posted the shilling at 98.65/75, unchanged from the previous day’s closing rate.

“The local factors are there, end-month demand and such, but guys are watching this Greek story unfolding and the outcome could cause a reaction,” said a trader with a commercial bank.

With Greece heading to a potential default, the trader said the euro could weaken against the dollar, putting pressure on the shilling as well.
