Gangsters shoot M-Pesa shop customer dead

A man was shot dead in a robbery at an M-Pesa shop in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

The victim was in the shop along Third Street when three men posing as customers walked in. As the victim engaged them, one of the men drew a pistol and demanded cash prompting a confrontation. He then shot the customer in the chest.

The man died while being taken to hospital, said Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome. The gang then took an unknown amount of money from the shop and escaped on foot.

Elsewhere, two suspected criminals were shot and wounded in separate robbery incidents in Nairobi.

The first incident happened in Githurai 44 where a gang of three had been attacking and robbing residents. Police were called and they shot and injured one of the suspects. His accomplices managed to escape.

Another suspect was shot and wounded along Mombasa Road while trying to rob motorists. He is believed to be the same person who shot and injured a motorist on Tuesday night in a robbery. The victims are admitted in different hospitals under police watch.

Businessman Jitendra Chevda, 49, the victim of the Tuesday shooting, is admitted to MP Shah Hospital, Nairobi, in stable condition.

He told police that he was driving home when he was attacked by a lone gunman. The man demanded that he be given money and other valuables by the driver whose window was rolled down.

Police say the victim resisted and the gunman shot him in the shoulder. The criminal then took his valuables and escaped on foot as other motorists sped off.

Crime scene investigators recovered a spent cartridge and a bullet head from the vehicle. Police said they are yet to know if the gunman was acting on information or he was just trying his luck to get money.

"This was a lone gunman but we are trying to know more on the attack," Mr Koome said.

Four people, who were in the vehicle during the incident, are assisting police with investigations.
