What to do when your child chokes

News

Raising a child comes with its own challenges. Children and toddler tend to insert objects in their mouths and choke. Children are delicate, and anything they eat, play with and even wear should be monitored.

The main challenge young parent’s face and they don’t know how to handle is chocking. Children like inserting objects in their mouths. Small toys, mubbles and even food, it is important to make sure they are not at their disposal, and you should be careful with them. But no matter how careful you are, an accident may happen and the child may choke.

So what should a mother do when their child chokes? If you can see the object then remove it carefully without hurting the child. Don’t poke blindly or repeatedly with your fingers because this may push the object further. If the child is coughing loudly don’t stop them, let them cough out the object but monitor them closely.

If the coughing is not helping, sit down and lay your baby face down along your thighs, supporting their head with your hand.  Give up to five sharp back blows with the heel of one hand in the middle of the back between the shoulder blades. This applies to children under the age of one.

For children over one year, lay their face on your lap, supporting their head with your hand. Give five back blows from behind and be careful not to hurt them.

If the back blows don’t relieve the chocking, then try abdominal thrusts. Stand or kneel before your child, and place your arms under theirs and around their upper abdomen. Clench your fist and place it between the navel and ribs. Grasp this hand with your other hand and pull sharply inwards and upwards. Repeat this up to five times. Make sure you don't apply pressure to the lower ribcage, as this may cause damage.

If the child is unconscious, put them on a flat surface and call for help. Perform CPR on the child on your way to the hospital.

The next time your child chokes, try this tips they will help you.
