238 football teams from across East Africa have signed up to compete in the 2016 edition of the Gold Cup Tournament which kicked off today at the St. Mary’s School, Lavington, organized by Green Sports Africa in partnership with gaming platform mCHEZA.

The tournament, which attracted 18 teams from Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda ends on Saturday 20th August at KRFU grounds, Ngong Road.

During the tournament, players stand a chance to be scouted by leading local and regional clubs including Vipers from Uganda, Azam from Tanzania, Harambee stars, Gor Mahia and Bandari FC from Kenya, APR from Rwanda and TP Mazembe from Congo.

The teams will also stand a chance to secure trials for slots in clubs in Africa and Europe, with scholarship opportunities into the Green Sports Academy courtesy of mCHEZA.

mCHEZA Chief Executive Officer Peter Karimi affirmed the organization’s commitment to nurturing talent, and invited more youth to register for the tournament. He also thanked the international teams who attended the event and commended the Green Sports team for their continuous efforts to professionalize football in the region.

“I would like to thank the players who have come from beyond our borders to participate at the tournament in order to receive the exposure they need to take their talent to the next level.

Nurturing talent ranks high among our business objectives, and Green Sports have been able to rope in scouts from leading football clubs in the region to witness their level of professionalism in managing football,” noted Peter.

On his part, Green Sports Africa Co-founder and tournament organizer George Ouma expressed excitement over the growth of talent in the country and urged players to practice well for an opportunity to play in national clubs.

“We are humbled by the growing interest in youth taking up sports as part of their careers. We have registered 40 more teams than our previous Gold Cup edition. Beyond looking for players to sign up at the Green Sport Academy, we are offering the participants the opportunity to get signed up by local and regional clubs beyond Kenya’s borders whose scouts are present.”

“We therefore urge players to play at their best as this opportunity may earn them a spot in a leading club,” said George.

The teams will be competing for gold in the U13, under 15 Under 18 and under 23 categories.
