Eastleigh police officer found dead in his bathroom

Mystery surrounds the death of a police officer attached to Shauri Moyo Police Station.

Constable Lameck Kipchumba's body was found in his bathroom at an apartment occupied by police officers in Eastleigh, Nairobi, by his colleagues long after he had died.

The door to his house was wide open when his colleagues discovered the body hanging on a piece of cloth tied on a metal bar; an indication that he might have been killed outside and later dragged to the bathroom.

Police who visited the scene said the body had bruises on the head and back.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said investigations had not revealed the cause of death, or whether the officer was killed or committed suicide.

"His living room was open and his belongings were scattered all over the place. We are yet to establish if he was behind the whole mess or an outsider was responsible," said Mr Koome.

The officer who found Kipchumba's body said she never heard any commotion the night preceding the incident, and that she was informed by her house help that the door leading to their common kitchen was locked.

When she forced her way in, she found the house in a mess.

Witness account

Other witnesses said Kipchumba had been seen at a bar in the area on Friday night, but they could not ascertain whether he left alone or in the company of the colleagues he was with.

Kipchumba's colleagues described him as a hardworking officer. The body was moved to the City Mortuary.

Meanwhile, three suspected thugs were over the weekend killed in separate incidents in Nairobi. The first happened along Juja Road near Mlango Kubwa.

Police said they killed two suspects and recovered an assortment of stolen goods from them. They also recovered fresh meat believed to have been stolen.

The suspects' accomplices escaped on foot towards Mathare slums.

Another shooting incident happened in Ruai where a gun that had been stolen from a senior Administration Police officer last year was recovered.

The bodies were moved to the City mortuary.
