A group of leaders from Mt Kenya region have hit out at CORD over plans to hold a parallel Madaraka Day rally.

They accused the Opposition of attempting to paralyse the Government and drive the country into bloodshed.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and MPs Kanini Kega (Kieni East) and Esther Murugi (Nyeri Town) said holding parallel rallies on Wednesday will be going against the Constitution.

For the first time in history, the Government has decided to take the June 1 independence celebration to a town outside Nairobi. It will be marked at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.

However, CORD has said they will hold a parallel rally at Uhuru Park.

But Kega and Murugi questioned the motive behind Opposition leader Raila Odinga's actions and accused him of running a parallel government.

Kanini said they (Jubilee MPs) would stay behind in Nairobi and make sure no rally will be held in Uhuru Park.

"We only have one Government and will not allow a parallel to exist in this country. If it means we stay in Nairobi and deal with them (CORD), we are ready to do that," he said.

Kiunjuri said the Government would protect the Constitution even if it meant using teargas.
