Prison warder who accidentally shot student interdicted

The Ulanda High school form two student who shot by a Prison warder in Migori is helped into an ambulance during the Nyanza school games on May 27.

A prison warder who shot a student in Migori County has been interdicted.

Nyanza regional Police Coordinator Willy Lugusa also said the officer who is being held as investigations into his conduct continues, may face the sack and subsequently charged if found culpable.

The 16-year-old student of Ulanda Girls’ High School sustained serious injuries on her left eye and is admitted to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

According to Lugasa, the warder who was pursuing an escaped inmate accidentally shot the student who was participating in the Lake Region Secondary School games at Migori Boys.

Police negligence

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible police negligence that could not enable the officer distinguish students from prisoners. We demand immediate action against the officer,” said Kisumu County Kuppet Executive Secretary Zablon Awange. Samuel Orwa, the Executive Secretary Kuppet, Migori branch has noted that the interdiction is not enough, saying the warder should be charged in court. “We are irked by what happened. An officer cannot shoot in a school compound just because they are in pursuit of a fleeing prisoner, he must be brought to book,” Orwa insisted.

Ulanda Girls Principal Sr Symprose could not be reached on phone, but a teacher at the school said they have been praying for the student.

Her colleagues who suffered trauma were treated and discharged from St Joseph Ombo Mission hospital where the student was first taken before she was referred to Eldoret.
