Gor Mahia easily swept aside Mathare United 2-0 in a Kenyan Premier League match at Nyayo Stadium yesterday.

Ugandan defender Godfrey Walusimbi scored a potential goal of the season in the 68th minute, before Jacques Tuyisenge netted the second in the 83rd minute.

Walusimbi, who was fed by Collins Okoth with a shot header, beat his marker and curled the ball past a diving Peter Odhiambo at Mathare’s goal.

Then a great delivery by Eric Ouma ended at the feet of Tuyisenge, who scored the second for Gor Mahia.

Gor Mahia would have won the match by an even bigger margin after dominating both halves.

They started strongly with Walusimbi’s fourth minute attempt at goal, being the clearest indication of Gor’s seriousness in this encounter.

But the Ugandan left-back could not find the target. Dangerman Jacques Tuyisenge was then caught offside as he went hunting.

Meanwhile, Karim Nzigiyimana was giving Mathare defenders a torrid time on the right flank and he attempted to pick out Tuyisenge and George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo on two occasions, but missed his target.

For a good part of the first half, Gor Mahia were clearly the dominant side as they made numerous attempts against a vulnerable Mathare side.

Mathare’s backline was forced to work over-time to neutralise Gor Mahia and they did a good as the first half ended in a barren draw.

The second half was a see-saw affair with both sides pushing for the opener. Walusimbi’s free-kick near the edge of the Mathare United goal was dealt with by Odhiambo.

Mathare then replied by winning a corner almost immediately. Then the two sides made their first substitutions. Gor Mahia rested Innocent Wafula for Francis Kahata, while Mathare brought in Alphonce Ndonye for Chrispine Oduor.

In an earlier match at the same venue, Posta Rangers bounced back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory against Nairobi City Stars.

Gearson Likonoh scored the lone goal of the match in the 21st minute as Rangers quickly forgot their last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Chemelil Sugar.

Rangers were always the more determined side and should have gone ahead early in the match had Collins Neto been lethal in front of goal.

As Rangers piled pressure, Collins Omondi’s shot went wide and Moses Otieno was unlucky not to score after his shot was deflected out of play.

The struggling City Stars sat back and sucked more pressure, which proved costly. Rangers finally found the back of the net in the 21st minute when Omondi dispossessed Calvin Masawa and fed Cavin Odongo whose resultant shot was blocked by Rony Kagunzi.
