NAKURU: A 51-year-old chief committed suicide on Friday evening after allegedly disagreeing with his secret lover over money.

It is alleged that Joseph Waweru Njuguna, a father of seven, committed suicide by hanging himself with a piece of rope in his bedroom after being frustrated by his estranged new lover.

According to family members Chief Njuguna, who was the assistant chief in Milimani, Subukia sub-county, spent an entire week with his secret lover before going back home.

Speaking to The Standard at their home, Joyce Wanjiku, the former chief’s widow, said her husband returned home on Wednesday and informed her that he had disagreed with a woman over money.

“My husband revealed to me his frustrations with a woman he was having an affair with. The woman had asked him for Sh6,000. On Friday morning, the woman kept calling asking for the money and warned him against going for his official uniform from her home,” she said.

WRITE A WILL

At around 1pm, Njuguna requested his wife to hand him a notebook and a pen, saying that he wanted to write a will. He chased way members of his family, including the wife.

Wanjiku said she went to do her house chores and returned after half an hour to find the door to the house locked from the inside.

She said when she peeped through the window, she was shocked to see the body of her husband dangling inside.

Subukia police boss Alex Ng’ang’a said the body was taken to Nyahururu Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem as police commenced investigations.

Mr Ng’ang’a said according to the suicide note left by the local administrator, he warned his family against burying him on his father’s land. It is suspected that he was not on good terms with members of his family.

The officer said incidents of suicide in the sub-county are on the rise and called on families to find better ways of solving disputes.

Last month, two people committed suicide in Subukia because of love gone bad.
