Gatundu man kills wife then commits suicide

Kiambu, Kenya: A casual labourer has killed his wife and hanged himself in Gatundu North.

It was not immediately clear why Michael Kinyanjui, 43, killed his wife Jane Wangui, 38. Wangui's body was discovered in their bed in a pool of blood while that of her husband was dangling from the roof in an adjacent room.

Their children broke into the room on Sunday morning after the two failed to wake up and prepare to attend a Church service as was the norm. The two left behind four children.

"I found the lifeless body of my mother lying on their bed. It was covered in blood and had some visible injuries. We later found my dad's body in the adjacent room," their daughter, who was preparing to join Form One, said.

She said they did not hear any commotion on Saturday night, adding that her parents did not seem to have any marital problems.

"Our parents have been very close. They seemed happy and to love each other. We are yet to find out what may have led to such a tragic act. It is such a blow to us to lose both parents in such a manner," she said.

Lucy Njeri, a neighbour and friend to the couple, said she was with Wangui the previous day and she was jovial.

A police officer from Kamwangi Police Station said they were investigating the incident. The bodies were taken to General Kago Funeral Home.
