MPs walk out of CS Wakhungu meeting

Environment Cabinet Secretary Judy Wakhungu

Three MPs and Members of County Assembly yesterday stormed out of a meeting convened by Environment Cabinet Secretary Judy Wakhungu.

MPs Thomas Mwadeghu (Wundanyi), Jones Mlolwa (Voi), Andrew Mwadime (Mwatate) and MCAs walked out of the meeting at Wundanyi Dawson Mwanyumba stadium in Taita-Taveta County to protest government failure to address persistent human wildlife conflict.

Earlier at the governor's boardroom, the meeting turned chaotic after the politicians, CS and Kenya Forestry Service board chairperson Peter Kirigua clashed over the agenda.

The MPs demanded wildlife conflict should be the agenda of the day and not forest conservation as earlier planned.

But Mr Kirigua told the leaders to keep politics out of the function as it was meant to recognise the county government for being the first one to be handed over 44 forests. Mr Mwadeghu said residents had suffered for long due to wildlife attacks.

Prof Wakhungu was in the area to preside over the official signing of the county transitional implementation plan and launch of the green initiative programme.
