Family seeks help to take daughter to India

A 21-year-old woman on life supporting medication for more than 10 years is now appealing for financial assistance after both of her kidneys failed.

Michelle Wanjiru from Kahuho, Kabete constituency, who sat her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination in hospital, and managed a C+ is seeking Sh3 million to enable her travel to India for specialised treatment.

Her mother, Damaris Wairimu, who is the sole breadwinner, is supposed to travel with her as she is her kidney donor. This means, a third relative must accompany them to nurse them for a number of days.

"The doctors said she has developed high blood pressure and diabetes, and she needs immediate medical attention to save her life," said Ms Wairimu.

Wanjiru's medical problems started when she was only 10 years old.

"We have been to so many hospitals until it reached a point I did not want to see or think about a hospital, but I have no choice since I want my daughter to live," she said.

The single mother of two operates a food kiosk along Thika Road, which has been badly hit by the daughter's medical needs. At the moment, she is spending Sh20,000 per week since Wanjiru has to attend dialysis twice a week at a cost of Sh10,000 per visit.
