Sir Alex Ferguson admits his disciplinary measures cost Man United titles - but he has no regrets

Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes he could have won MORE league titles at Old Trafford - if he didn't focus so much on good discipline.

Ferguson, reading an extract from his upcoming book 'Leading', says that regardless of how many more trophies he could have won, he would not change his managerial style if he was to do it again.

The 73-year-old says that it is about picking the right times to hand out the big telling offs.

He said: “People will give a manager plenty of opportunities to crack the whip so it’s best to pick and choose your moments.

"You don’t have to dish out a punishment very often before everyone gets the message.

"I place discipline above all else and it might have cost us several titles.

"But if I had to repeat things I’d do it precisely the same because discipline has to come before anything else.”

'Leading' is released on September 22 and investigates Ferguson's successful 22-year tenure in charge of the club.

Ferguson will return to Manchester United's Facebook page with a further six excerpts covering listening, distractions, pipeline (youth development), teamwork, decisions and preparation.

On the serialisation of the book, Ferguson said: “The book brings together the most important skills and the key philosophies I developed during my 38 years as a football manager and draws on my experiences of managing some of the biggest talents in the game in a high-pressure environment."
