TNA dismisses case against Nyeri woman rep

Nyeri County Woman representative Priscillah Nyokabi yesterday survived the wrath of The National Alliance (TNA), as it started a purge aimed at instilling discipline among members.

Ms Nyokabi was among a group of “errant” leaders who had been summoned over alleged disciplinary cases against them.

However, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and nominated senator Joy Gwendo are still under scrutiny.

TNA Executive Director Joseph Mathai, who is also the secretary of the disciplinary committee, said the case against Nyokabi was dismissed after the committee determined the charges against her were unsubstantiated.

“The charges against Nyokabi as well as her defence for the charges were carefully considered and the committee was convinced that the accusations were largely based on rumours, innuendo, and hearsay. We therefore agreed with Nyokabi’s defence that it would be unjust to proceed without evidence,” Mr Mathai said.

The MP had been accused of contributing to the International Criminal Court process, which eventually led to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s indictment during her time at the helm of Kituo cha Sheria. Nyeri TNA branch office had requested the party to kick Nyokabi out of all committees in Parliament, withdraw her TNA nomination ticket and also expel her from the party. Two Members of the party from Kiambu county also faced the disciplinary committee and were exonerated.

Riabai ward representative Martin Wachira was accused of being in possession of illicit brew and failing to remit monthly party contributions amounting to Sh87,000.

“On the first charge the defence was solid, considering the chief magistrate court ruling therefore the charge was dismissed. However, on the second charge, he was found guilty and was ordered to pay the outstanding amount of Sh87,000 to the party,” Mathai said.

Charges against TNA Kiambu Branch Secretary Solomon Ndung’u were also dismissed due to lack of evidence.

“The party official had been charged with allegedly obtaining Sh500,000 from a party member under the pretext that he had the authority to do so on behalf of the party. However these charges could not be proved to the required threshold,” Mathai said, adding that the party summons had been honored by all MPs and MCAs.

“This is a friendly disciplinary committee and therefore we have been fair,” he added.
