Joy as Wangu wa Makeri gets sucked into scandal

Wangu wa Makeri, Meta Meta’s deputy principal, is staring at a scandal. She has declared war on some students. Since last week, she has been screening boys in her office. Initially, we thought she was vetting them for the school’s student council elections, which are overdue. It is Flo who let that proverbial cat out of the bag.

A week ago on Friday evening, wa Makeri had gone to unwind at her favourite pub. She walks around with a Techno tablet and prides herself as ‘a digital teacher’. She sneers at JJ’s, our popular joint where we also demolish goats’ engines and drink muteta soup.

She was overheard asking Thunder what we find so interesting in such a ‘drab joint’ which doesn’t even have a suitable parking for her Subaru besides lacking Wifi connectivity. That same Friday, Obama was jetting in and some students, suspected to have blood ties with Kogelo, sneaked out to watch their ‘cousin’s’ arrival on the giant screen at the same joint.

Having witnessed the arrival of the president of presidents, they were too excited to leave and were audacious enough to order for a bottle of whisky. As the night wore on, the young revellers hit the dance floor where they are said to have regaled the patrons with Meta Meta’s latest dance moves.

One of them, on his way to the urinal, saw Depa and alerted his friends about her presence. The boys hatched what they thought was a brilliant idea. They ordered a glass of Amarula for her. “Tell her it’s from a former student,” they informed the waiter. Wa Makeri was flattered by the gesture.

Not wanting to be outdone, she bought her benefactor a ‘half’ bottle of whisky, via the clubs ‘Lipa na Mpesa’ facility since her purse was running low. The truants were excited enough to ask the DJ to play a special number dedicated to Meta Meta’s Depa. Wa Makeri was surprised to hear the DJ’s announcement, “hii ngoma ni special dedication kwa Depa wa Meta Meta.”

Rumour mill

Getting curious, she rose to enquire who the former students were, and across the dance floor collided with one of the rascals.

Something about the dancer made her stop for a keener look. However, the wine in her veins conspiring with the dim disco lights interfered with her focus.

The boy on the other hand instantly sobered up, alerted his friends and made a bee line for the door. By the time wa Makeri’s head cleared enough to reconstruct a figure in Meta Meta’s school uniform, they had vanished. She sobered up too. Confronting the management, she wanted to know why the establishment was selling alcohol to under eighteen’s.

She couldn’t, however, prove her claims as the boys had disappeared. Besides, ‘the said underage patrons’ had not only bought her a drink, but she had also ‘returned a hand’! Cursing out loud, she took off in her Subaru at the speed of a Formula One rally driver.

Her attempts at identifying the culprits during weekend preps were fruitless and in desperation she confided in Flo. Flo is said to have advised her to carry out the investigations ‘chini ya Maji’. The boys could turn round and frame her for having taken them out, she warned.

Despite her vow of secrecy to Wa Makeri, the info was too exciting to keep to herself. In strict confidence, she shared it with Annette. Annette has never forgiven Depa for ruining her chances of becoming the dean and eventually succeeding Okonkwo. She told Schola. Schola our dependable rumour mill caretaker has a reach as wide as CNN’s and by the end of the day, the whole staff including Jezebel in the kitchen knew Depa drinks with students!
