Nazarene to host 4th edition of varsity games

Kenyatta University will seek to extend their dominance when Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) Women’s National Championships, now in fourth edition, head for Africa Nazarene University this weekend.

Kenyatta University have emerged overall champions in two out of the three last editions. Over 25 universities have confirmed participation at the event which enters its fourth edition this year.  

University of Nairobi came in second, while Egerton University finished third at last year’s championships.

Other universities that will take part in the championships are Moi University, hosts Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Africa Nazarene, Kenya Methodist, South Eastern University, Multi Media University, Kisii, United States International University- Africa, University of Nairobi, St Paul’s, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Egerton, Meru University College, Mt Kenya, University of Eldoret and Dedan Kimathi.

The championship is meant to celebrate the International Women’s Day whose theme is  “Make it happen”.

Teams comprising only female university student-athletes from both public and private universities will be in action during the two-day event. The championships will see the higher institutions of learning take part in 16 sports disciplines; football, basketball, chess, scrabble, badminton, karate, tae-kwon-do, hockey, softball, handball, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, netball, athletics and swimming.

Strathmore University will defend their basketball and hockey titles won last year. MMUST won last year’s football title, while Kenyatta University will defend handball, karate, volleyball, netball and scrabble titles.

Teams will pay Sh5,000 participation fee, as individual athletes pay Sh500. During the two-day event, there will be a rugby demonstration match.

KUSA Women’s Committee Chairperson Rose Marete of University of Nairobi, urged more universities to register for the championships saying: “Sports is a major employer and we always encourage our female students to exploit their talents.”
