According to Kenyatta University sociology lecturer, Dr Francis Kerre, Dorothy Nutwol, a student, Administration Police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi and security expert Capt (rtd) Simiyu Werunga, some of the precautionary measures each student should observe include:

1. Not trusting every person that they meet or interact with within and outside the university.

2. Not walking home alone, but always in groups of more than three colleagues or friends, especially at night.

3. Avoiding social places where there is high consumption of alcohol and drugs.

4. Always alerting friends and relatives about their whereabouts, giving details of their exact location.

5. Making sure that they are familiar with their immediate surroundings.

6. In case of late night studies for non-resident students, arranging to sleep in the university instead of risking going home, unless the university provides transport for students studying late.

7. When out partying, being in a group and making sure that some of the students remain sober and avoid getting into brawls.

8. If necessary, pooling cash and hiring a taxi for the trip back to campus.

9. Ensuring proper screening at the gate during night functions in campus to deter intruders.

10. For female students, avoiding dark places within campus at night or visiting male hostels unaccompanied or getting into situations where soft drinks can be laced with alcohol or drugs.
