Law school student commits suicide in Kericho

KERICHO, KENYA: A Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) law school student from Kericho County committed suicide by hanging himself in their family store.

Confirming the incident, Kericho Police Commander Rose Muchuma said the deceased, Kevin Kipkurui committed suicide using a rope in his family home in the up market residential estate behind Sunshine Upperhill hotel around 9am on Wednesday over unknown reasons.

"A worker at the home stumbled on the body of the deceased dangling from the iron sheet structure that serve as a store and alerted family members and the police. Medical officers from Kericho district hospital also arrived on the scene and certified the young man dead," she said.

She added that the deceased had just completed his studies and was waiting to graduate.

She said the death came as a shock for the family who owns one of the prominent private primary schools in the county since in the morning the deceased had woken up to his normal routine and took tea before disappearing only for his body to be found shortly thereafter.

"The young man woke up as usual, took tea and retired from the sitting room only for his body to be found later," said Muchuma.

Police say the body has been moved to Siloam hospital mortuary where a postmortem would be conducted to ascertain the probable cause of death.

The deceased did not leave behind a suicide note.
