Nairobi, Kenya: The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has constituted a team of eleven lawyers towards prosecuting police officers who teargased pupils at Lang’ata Road Primary School.
The society’s President Eric Mutua said that the lawyers will be led by LSK Council Member and Kituo Cha Sheria Executive Director Gertrude Angote.
The other members include LSK Council Member Dennis Mosota, Anthony Mulekyo, John Chigiti, Rose Mbanya and Julie Soweto.
Michael Muchemi, Oscar Sang, Haron Olando and Brenda Dora are also members of the legal team.
“The country has witnessed with horror and shock the brutality visited upon defenseless children at Lang’ata Primary School in Nairobi,” Mutua said.
Mutua was addressing the media after chairing a full LSK Council Meeting at the LSK Secretariat in Lavington, Nairobi.
He said that it is a sad day for the country to be associated with events akin to Soweto in South Africa where children were killed and brutalized during the apartheid era.
The LSK President said that the barbaric police action is an affront to the fundamental rights of children to care and protection, security and education as enshrined in the Constitution and international law.
Mutua said that the constituted team of 11 lawyers will consider the barbaric police action and record statements from the children and management of the school.
“The lawyers will follow the legal procedures with a view to identifying the perpetrators of the worst attack on our children since independence,” Mutua said.
He said that the LSK shall also liaise with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and Independent Police Oversight Authority towards prosecution and discipline of involved officers.
Mutua said that the LSK acknowledges the suspension of the officer who led the operations where teargas was used on pupils.
