Prison bus and train collision leaves at least 10 people dead in Texas

AUSTIN, TEXAS: A Texas prison bus carrying 15 people veered onto railroad tracks and was hit by a train on Wednesday, prison officials said, with local media reporting at least 10 people were killed.

The bus was traveling from Abilene to El Paso with 12 inmates and three corrections officers aboard when it skidded off a highway, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said.

The accident took place near the western Texas city of Odessa.

Officials at the scene said at least 10 people were killed, the local CBS affiliate and the Odessa American newspaper reported. The state's Department of Criminal Justice did not provide details on injuries or deaths.

Medical Center Hospital in Odessa is treating five patients, according to spokeswoman Tiffany Harston. She did not have information on the patients' conditions or if the hospital is expecting any more arrivals from the accident scene.
