A 70-year-old man is recuperating at the Coast Provincial General Hospital (CPGH) after he was shot by a gunman on Monday.

Ngoro Nyaga, who is nursing a bullet wound to his left shoulder, told The Standard: ''I am lucky to be alive and thank the Almighty God for saving me from the jaws of death.'' He complained he lost his most valuable property in the attack; a copy of the Bible.

Nyaga said he was from Neno Evangelism Church and was attacked when he entered a Kahawa tungu (coffee) kiosk to sip his favourite beverage.

Mombasa County Deputy Police Commander Severino Kubai said the man was shot after he resisted the gunmen's attempt to steal his bag. ''We are however yet to establish the motive of the attack and the two attackers are yet to be apprehended," he said.

Acting CPGH Administrator Iqbal Khandhwala said the patient was responding well to treatment.
