Port to upgrade its cruise ship handling facility

Plans by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to put up a dedicated modern berth to handle cruise ship and passengers calling at the port of Mombasa are still on.

KPA Chairman Danson Mungatana said the authority will go ahead with preparations for projected positive tourism trends by reviving berths number one and two and modernise  cruise handling terminals at the port facility.

He said the planned upgrade is estimated to cost Sh100 million.

Mungatana made the remarks when he officiated at this year’s Miss Tourism Mombasa County finals in coastal city over the weekend. “The project, which has been in the pipeline was suspended following sharp decline in cruise ship activities as a result of runway piracy along the Indian Ocean,” explained Mungatana.
