The Kenya Publishers Association today presented books worthy Ksh 5.5 million to State House to be used at the institution’s resource centre.
Receiving the books on behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta, Private Secretary Jomo Gecaga thanked the association for the donation. He said apart from benefiting State House staff, the books will be used in mentorship programmes.
Mr. Gecaga added that State House will work out modalities to see how the Government can partner with the local publishers to promote the reading culture in schools and among all Kenyans.
“This is a very kind gesture, the books will help in mentorship and we will see how we can partner with you to ensure we promote the culture of reading among Kenyans,” said Mr. Gecaga.
The publishers – led by their chairman who is also the Managing Director of Mountain Top Publishers Lawrence Njagi – donated 5000 books which included academic books, biographies, story books and digital books.
On the availability of digital books, the President’s Private Secretary expressed hope that more Kenyans will be able to enjoy using them as they are functional, practical and easy to carry.
The Chairman of Kenya Publishers Association called for a periodical review of the Kenya school curriculum so as to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of upgrading the country’s education system.
Mr. Njagi said he was happy to hear the President calling for a review of the Kenya School Curriculum because the education system needs to be updated, especially to cope with the use of the Information Communication Technology.
“We need to fast-track curriculum review in our country. Our neighbour, Rwanda reviews its curriculum after every five years,” said Mr. Njagi.
Present were Molo Member of Parliament Jacob Macharia, Spotlight Publishers Managing Director who is also the Association Vice chairman Simon Sossion, Longhorn Publishers Managing Director Musyoki Muli, Moran Publishers Managing Director David Muita, Kenya Literature Bureau Managing Director Mrs Eve Obara, Phoenix Publishers Chief Executive John Mwazemba, BookMark Africa Managing Director Kakai Karani.
Others were Nilesh Vekaria of Laxmi booksellers & Stationers and Wanjiru Denge of Single Education & Publishers.
