MCAs give statements over police station storming incitement

EMBU COUNTY: Two ward reps who were last week summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for allegedly inciting the public to take the law into their own hands have recorded statements with the police.

Joseph Nyaga (Mavuria) and Martin Mwangi (Kiambere) appeared at Kiritiri Police Station where they denied inciting the public to lynch suspected thugs or invade a police station.

"We did not ask residents to storm a police station three weeks ago after 11 Ethiopian illegal immigrants, thought to be members of a gang, were arrested," they told the Press after recording statements.

 SET UP

The two leaders claimed they were set up because of their vocal stand on the disputed Ngigere land, where police recently evicted residents, and for fighting against rampant insecurity.

Mr Mwangi said he was at the county assembly when demonstrators stormed the police station while Mr Nyaga said he was in Nairobi on official duty.

Majority Leader Andrew Musakwa, together with MCAs Silas Nyaki and Shunem Ngira, criticised the summoning, saying it was meant to undermine the two leaders.

Mwangi and Nyaga have been accused of, among other things, calling for the formation of a vigilante group.
