Motorcycle operator, passenger killed in Naivasha road accident

Naivasha, Kenya: Two people were killed and scores left nursing serious injuries following a road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The Thursday night accident near Karai center in Naivasha involved a motorcycle and two public service vehicles (PSVs).

The deceased were a motorcycle operator and his passenger while those seriously injured include a driver of one of the PSVs.

Following the 9pm accident, tens of motorcycle operators blocked the busy highway for close to an hour before police arrived.

During the incident, several motorists had their car windscreens smashed by the irate operators who were protesting the death of the duo.

A witness Sammy Mwaura said that one of the PSVs popularly known as Maruti was to blame for the accident.

He said that the Maruti took a u-turn in the middle of the road hitting the motorcycle operator and his driver who were right behind him.

"The motorcycle which was going downhill rammed on the Maruti killing the operator and his passenger on the spot," he said.

Mwaura added that a Nissan Matatu that was heading towards Nairobi from Naivasha rammed on the side of the Maruti.

"The driver of the maruti who was alone at the time of the accident was seriously injured and was rushed to hospital in critical condition," he said.

He said that at least five passengers from the matatu were injured from the impact.

A senior police officer who declined to be named confirmed the incident adding that the bodies had been taken to the area mortuary.

The officer added that the injured were getting treatment at the Naivasha sub-county referral hospital.

"Those injured are in stable condition and the mangled wrecks have been towed to Naivasha police station," said the officer.
