Police kill two suspected thugs, injure three onlookers

Nairobi, Kenya: Two suspected thugs were Wednesday morning shot dead in Dandora, Nairobi and stolen property recovered from them in a robbery incident. This comes in the wake of rising cases of armed robbery in the city.

Three other bystanders were also shot and seriously wounded by police in the incident.

Police say they were responding to a distress call from a woman who had been attacked and was being robbed when they opened fire, killing the two suspects and injuring the innocent onlookers.

The injured were rushed to hospital in serious condition.

Police authorities said they were investigating the incident.

“We want to know how the shooting happened because we understand some innocent people were injured,” said an officer who asked not to be named because of fear of being victimised.

Traumatised passengers

The bodies of the victims were later moved to the mortuary.

Elsewhere, police are looking for a five-man gang that carjacked a matatu in Kayole on Tuesday night and robbed passengers of their cash and valuables before abandoning them along Thika road.

Police say the matatu was headed to Kayole when some of the passengers of the about 50 who were on board turned out to be thugs.

They whipped out their guns and took control of the vehicle before turning to Thika Road near Clay Works, where they abandoned it with the traumatised passengers.

No arrest has been made so far.

Police are also investigating another incident in which passengers of a carjacked matatu were drugged after being robbed in Dandora. No officer wanted to confirm the incident but victims said they were attacked by gunmen on Monday night. There were also claims of rape during the robbery.

Three suspected thugs were also lynched on Monday night during a botched robbery in Mukuru kwa Reuben slums in Nairobi. Police said the men were accused of robbing pedestrians before an alarm was raised.
