Why homework is good for you

Nairobi; Kenya: Homework is the assignments teachers give to students to do at home (out of class).

It is an extension of school work and is intended to be a positive experience that encourages students to learn.

A teacher’s intention when he/she gives homework is to help students review, apply and absorb what they have learnt in class. Yet it is one of the things that many students dread the most.

When you do your homework, don’t do it just for the sake of completing it and avoiding punishment; do it so that you understand the concept better.

 Benefits of homework

• Building a student’s sense of responsibility and encouraging them to complete the work on their own. Completing a school assignment requires planning and organising. When a student completes their homework on time, they learn how to plan.
• A student is able to practice what they learn in school while they prepare for exams. It also enables a student sharpen their research skills.
• It is a communication link between students, parents and the teachers. The teacher assigns the homework and the parent or guardian ensures the student has done the homework, hence a cycle of communication and feedback on the student’s performance.
• It also enhances a student’s ability to manage time and complete their work independently, which enhances self-discipline.
• Homework allows students to take interest in their work. When a teacher gives positive feedback regarding a student’s homework, the student becomes more confident and develops an aptitude for exploring and learning.
• It improves a student’s grasp of subjects since they apply the skills they have learnt in class and even enhance them. They are also able to learn from their mistakes and improve on them. This way, they are bound to perform well in class and in overall academic work.

How to achieve optimum results

1. Do it in a quiet, well lit space where there are no distractions like the TV or loud music.
2. Have a regular homework routine. You can decide to do your homework immediately after dinner, or before.

Do not, however, do your homework when you are hungry because you may not get the desired results.

Be consistent so that homework becomes a priority.
