NAIROBI, KENYA: The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has formally replaced Gideon Mung’aro as Minority Whip in the National Assembly with Thomas Mwadeghu.

Through a letter dated July 23 to National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, Minority Leader Francis Nyenze said the decision was reached at CORD’s Parliamentary Group meeting on Tuesday.

In a separate letter CORD has also asked Mung’aro to immediately hand over to Mwadeghu.

Accordingly Mung’aro will also cease to be a member of the House Business Committee.

The decision to formally remove Mung’aro came just a day after some Coast MPs rejected an order from the coalition’s leadership to replace him with another MP from their region.

At a press briefing at Parliament Buildings on Wednesday, MPs Abdulswamad Sharif (Mvita), Mwalimu Mwahima (Likoni), Isha Katana (Women Rep), Mustapha Idi (Kilifi South), Dan Kazungu (Malindi Town) and Senator Steward Madzayo said Mung’aro was unfairly targeted.

The MPs met under the Coast Parliamentary Group caucus, which Munga’ro chairs to reject the ouster, and which brings together MPs from various parties.

Six Jubilee MPs led by Majority Deputy Leader Naomi Shaban were present at the meeting, which demanded Mung’aro’s reinstatement although the decision is within CORD’s purview.
