Is greed taking its toll on society

News

Lately, we have been treated to some bizarre incidents that have left me wondering where we are headed as a society. A young woman is in court for killing her boyfriend, and a young man committed suicide after killing a girl who refused his advances.

Our politicians are engaging is venomous speeches while others have adopted a culture of primitive accumulation of resources, especially at the county level.

These among, other negative behaviours, appear to have been entrenched in our society. The biggest question therefore is, have we lost direction as a society?

Kenyans today are living by the creed of greed and this has made them very intolerant of their fellow Kenyans.

This country has been unable to manage the education system, the economy, railway transport, farms and many institutions 50 years down the line after independence because of greed.

Forests have been grabbed and converted into private plots, yet we know the adverse effect of this – the El Nino we are now being told to prepare for and the drought we keep experiencing now and then.

This is a country where many a politician, many a respected individual now stand on rooftops and pontificate about what Kenyans should do, while they themselves practice these evils and thrive on them.

Our education system does not foster foresightedness but rather creation of wealth. No wonder you find a person coming from a village where there may be several physicists and there’s no running water, there’s no electricity and people are dying of hunger every year.

We must do away with the attitude of “me first” and cultivate the culture of empathy and friendliness.
