Deputy President William Ruto Deputy President William Ruto greets Harambee Stars assistant coach Musa Otieno when he opened Camp Toyoyo Stadium in Makadara on Friday.

Deputy President William Ruto has directed the Ministry of Sports to take urgent steps to return Kenyan football back to its glory days.

Ruto said the current status of the game in Kenya is pathetic and pitiable and the Government must take measures.

He said organisations responsible for running football must be professional.

“I ask the Ministry of Sports to take urgent and necessary steps to return football to its rightful place,” he said. “We want to ask those responsible for running football that we need our football in its rightful place.”

The Deputy President was speaking at Makadara Constituency, when he launched the Camp Toyoyo Stadium, Jericho, Nairobi.

The stadium was constructed by the Constituency Development Fund.

He added: “Those responsible for running football in Kenya must up their game. We cannot have a scenario where we are defeated by everyone.”

“Our football is in disgrace. We must have a conversation as a country and managers of our football organisations so that we take football to its rightful place.”

Ruto witnessed a match between Parliament and Nairobi County Assembly which ended with the MPs beating MCAs 2-0.

An exhibition match between local clubs saw the likes of Musa Otieno and many others from Eastlands take the field.

Ruto noted that the development of sports infrastructure such as the stadium was one way of growing professional sports men and women in the country as well as creating employment opportunities for the youth. “Sports is a multi-billion shilling industry and one of the largest employers,” he said.

He said sports had other benefits such as producing professional players, engaging the youth and keeping them occupied to minimise social vices. — DPPS
