KTN's Dorcas Wangira wins inaugural Africa award

Kakamega-based Standard Group correspondent Dorcas Wangira has bagged a continental award.

Ms Wangira, who is a KTN reporter, won this year's inaugural Mohammed Amin Africa award for her story on maternal health in Samburu County.

Her story, which featured on KTN in September 2014, highlighted challenges facing women in Samburu due to cultural beliefs.

"The story was heart-breaking because some of the healthcare challenges endanger mothers and the unborn, and could lead to death," said an elated Wangira at The Standard office in Kakamega.

Her story brought to light how poverty, low literacy levels, cultural beliefs and practices among rural Samburu women still endanger the lives of mothers and newborns.

"It is believed that a good story moves, entertains, enlightens, enthralls and excites audiences who will find it natural to react by sharing it on social media, debating over the issues it raises and even 'Like' it," she said.

The People's Choice Award goes to the story with the highest traffic of "Likes" and engagement on YouTube, and draws contestants from across Africa.
