Blogging Kenyan security officer arrested for making ‘fake’ Government documents

NAIROBI: A blogger has been arrested and charged with falsely making a government document and obtaining money with false pretence.

Patrick Safari who is popularly known as @moderncorps on Twitter was arrested at the Ruiru Prisons Training College where he had been summoned following complaints from members of the public.

Three people had complained Safari gave them calling letters to join Prisons College for training, which were fake.

The complainants said he took money from them in exchange for the letters.

Ruiru head of CID David Chebii said they intended to charge Safari with at least three charges.

“There are complainants so far and there are claims he received Sh570,000 from three people who the gave fake prison warder recruitment admission letters,” said Chebii.

Safari who is a prison warder based at Maralal by profession was expected before Thika law courts Monday where he was to take plea over the accusations.

Another group of police officers from Central police station in Nairobi went to Ruiru police seeking to have him following a complaint from journalist Mohamed Ali of Jicho Pevu.

Ali had recorded a statement at Central saying Safari had branded him a terrorist in tweets he posted on his handle.

The team from Central said they would wait for him to take plea before they would seek to detain him.

“He branded me a terrorist and called me names. All I am expecting from this is justice because he has even refused to apologise to me,” said Ali on Monday.

Safari has been using his handle to update his followers on various security and crime developments. This way, he abused and accused many risking his profession.
