Nairobi senator Mike Sonko has apparently stepped aside from his duties to pave way for investigations. This is after his name made an appearance on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission report that was tabled in parliament on Tuesday.
In what appeared to be Aprils Fools day joke to many, Sonko wrote a statement on his official Facebook page saying that he was “dismayed” his name had been included in the list of the people being investigated by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
His statement follows a revelation by the commission that Senator Sonko allegedly colluded with Energy CS Davis Chirchir to siphon money of up to 1.3 billion shillings from a Kenya Pipeline Company procurement deal; a claim that he has strongly denied.
He says the only connection with KPC is that it has headquarters in the same county that falls under his jurisdiction as a senator.
Armed with facts, the senator has seemingly legitimized his stepping aside saying that he had not been informed of any wrong doing.
His post sparked reactions as supporters and critics came out to weigh in on the issue.
While it remains unclear whether or not it is another Aprils Fool day prank, Sonko has out rightly come out to defend himself in the statement.
His supporters expressed their disbelief on his move to ‘step aside’. Others however, were quick to rubbish his stepping aside.
