Kenya has launched a major campaign to position the country as the origin of humankind, presenting a possibility for the country to host pilgrhttps://cdn.standardmedia.co.ke/images from all over the world.

The country is moving to develop and promote other tourism products instead of relying solely on beach and safari for marketing as part of efforts to increase the visitor numbers.

East African Affairs Commerce and Tourism Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie, said Kenya’s story as the origin of humankind has gone unnoticed. “We are here today to announce to you that we shall be part of the nations hosting pilgrhttps://cdn.standardmedia.co.ke/images from all over the world but more importantly, a pilgrimage to trace one’s origin in Kenya,” she told the international media at a Kenyan exhibition stand in Berlin, Germany.

Kandie is leading a Kenyan trade delegation from the tourism sector at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin Germany. More than 40 travel trade from Kenya including Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and scores of counties are attending the four-day fair to showcase tourism products that the country offers. International Tourism Bourse is the world’s leading travel trade show and one of the key international events that Kenya participates annually.

Uniqueness

Kandie noted that besides beach and safari that Kenya is known for, it was time to diversify products and showcase the uniqueness of the destination, adding that the launch of campaigns on Kenya as origin of humankind will mark a new strategy to market unique products. She disclosed that Kenya will next month, unveil the Turkana Boy in Turkana County as part of spirited campaigns to position Kenya as an origin of humankind.

The Turkana Boy was discovered by a Kenyan, Kamoya Kimeu working together with Dr Richard Leakey in 1984. It is estimated to have existed some 1.6 million years ago. The young boy of about nine and 12 years of age and 1.6 metres tall, is the only almost complete skeleton of a human related fossil ever found in the world.

The CS called on the counties to identify their different uniqueness in terms of tourism product offerings in line with the strategy to showcase product diversity. “We are calling on counties to work closely with KTB in packaging and promoting tourism products existing in their counties,” she said.

KTB Managing Director Muriithi Ndegwa, said Kenya is using the fair to send reassurance message to potential tourists of Kenya’s safety owing to improved security. “We shall also push for the revision of travel advisories,” added Ndegwa. The event draws thousands of trade buyers, exhibitors, media and delegates from across the world. The event is an ideal platform for the Kenya’s tourism fraternity to showcase what the country has to offer.
