They have proved us right, say MPs

Kenya: Members of Parliament affiliated to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance party (TNA) have reacted to International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor’s move to terminate his case saying that it was a bold move that was long overdue.

The MPs drawn largely from the Central, said the Hague-based court could not hold on to Fatou Bensouda’s argument that Mr Kenyatta was liable for the skirmishes that happened in the country between 2007 and 2008, because her evidence was not water-tight.

Addressing the press at Parliament Buildings yesterday, the MPs said the prosecution had failed from the start of the case as they had not done a proper and thorough investigation to unearth the real perpetrators of the violence.

Kiharu Member of Parliament Irungu Kang’ata said the flop of the case against the president would give the Kenyan government a stand to push for amendments when they sit in the Assembly of States conference in New York next week.

Kang’ata said they would be floating seven proposals for consideration key among them the compensation of the suspects if the prosecution fails to establish a case against them.

“We had predicted that the case against our President would flop. We thank God that finally the case has been dropped. It is an indication that the prosecution was not competent,” Kang’ata said.

Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau said: “It is heartbreaking that a prosecutor with international resources at her disposal has ended up taking the world on a wild goose chase. One can only imagine the psychological torture this has caused President Kenyatta. It is a letdown to victims who have long waited to see justice served.”

He added: “In the Ruto case, we have seen a series of witnesses say they were coached or paid. That case should equally be withdrawn so that our two leaders can concentrate on serving the 40 million Kenyans. The ICC prosecutor has failed Kenyans and the world,” he said.

MPs Alice Muthoni and David Waweru said the withdrawal would strengthen the UhuRuto relationship.
