NTSA seeks more funds in crackdown on rogue motorists

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is seeking more funds in its fight against errant drivers. However, the authority said despite the challenge of insufficient funds, it was up to task as the number of fatal road accidents had dropped by 11 per cent this year.

According to the authority chairman Lee Kinyanjui, they had launched specific road safety teams across major highways ahead of the festive season, despite the challenges.

Kinyajui added they had also initiated an anti-drinking campaign during the festive season, when many drivers drive while under the influence of alcohol.

"The authority is committed to reducing the number of accidents further and we are targeting careless and drunk drivers and un-roadworthy vehicles," he said.

Speaking in Naivasha after opening Tata Motors branch, Kinyanjui added the authority had launched an undercover unit targeting public service vehicles where women have fallen victim of stripping recently, as was the case in Nairobi.

Lakeview Member of County Assembly Simon Wanyoike decried the high number of road accidents along a section of the Nairobi-Nakuru highway and challenged NTSA to intervene. "We are recording at least one fatal accident between Naivasha and Kinungi and are calling for erection of flyovers on sections of this road," he said.
