Plan to have more Kenyans access electricity

Kenya: The Government is set to double electricity connectivity from the current 30 to 80 per cent within the next four years, Energy Principal Secretary Joseph Njoroge has said.

Njoroge said once production has been scaled up to 5,000 megawatts, majority of Kenyans will easily access power from the national grid.

The PS also said the Government is set to invest in power generation in the same period at a cost of Sh1.5 trillion, basically for infrastructure development.

“All these efforts are geared towards making electric power more affordable to Kenyans by reducing the cost from the current 40 to 10 per cent,” he said.

He said the Government adopted the strategy after it emerged that some businesspeople have been relocating to neighbouring Ethiopia where power is much cheaper compared to Kenya.

Njoroge was speaking at a Kerugoya hotel when he opened a one-day forum for the Government’s medium term plan, Phase II, yesterday.

At the same time, Njoroge assured Kirinyaga residents that the frequent power blackouts being experienced in the area would be a thing of the past once construction of a 132 KV grid is completed.
