Nairobi, Kenya: Samburu East MP Raphael Letimalo is recuperating in hospital after he was on Friday night shot and injured in a robbery in Ongata Rongai, Nairobi.

Police said Letimalo, who was injured in the leg, is in stable condition. They said he was robbed of Sh30,000, two mobile phones and other valuables.

Letimalo got out of his car to open his gate when he was attacked. His bodyguard was not with him at the time.

Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue suspect the gang wanted to take off with the car when Letimalo resisted and fought back. Kibue said the attackers escaped on foot and no arrest had been made. “That was an isolated case and we are looking for the gunmen. He is stable in hospital,” said Kibue, who visited the scene .

Rongai is a fast upcoming residential area. Its poor planning makes it difficult for police to secure.

Proper planning

Residents have asked authorities to ensure proper planning and monitoring of upcoming structures to address crime. Police deny the claim saying it is manageable.

Last year in December, Turkana County  Woman Rep, Joyce Emankor was attacked in the same area by gunmen who escaped after her bodyguard shot at them.  Kibue said more police officers have been deployed to Ongata Rongai and other areas in Nairobi to boost security.

On Friday night, more than 300 people were arrested in fresh operations aimed at checking insecurity in the city, bringing to more 1,500 the number of those arrested since Wednesday night.
