Jubilee MPs dismiss CORD over Electoral and Boundaries Commission

Baringo, Kenya: MPs and Senators allied to the Jubilee Government have dismissed calls by CORD leaders for the disbanding of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) due to alleged election discrepancies.

The Jubilee leaders, who spoke in Kabarnet, Baringo County, during a thanksgiving ceremony for the East African Community, Tourism and Commerce Cabinet Secretary Pyllis Kandie, said the IEBC could be disbanded only through the law.

Led by leaders of the majority in the National Assembly and Senate, Aden Duale and Prof Githure Kindiki, they dismissed the CORD leadership as a “depressed” lot.

Duale said IEBC is an independent body formed under Article 249 and 250 of the Constitution and can only be disbanded by presenting a petition to the National Assembly through Article 251.

“IEBC, just like the Commission on Revenue Allocation, the Transition Authority and the Police Commission, can never be disbanded through campaign rallies.

“If CORD are serious about it, they should bring the petition to the House; but it’s unfortunate as Jubilee has numbers,” said Duale.

He said the IEBC was formed during the Coalition Government, then led by retired President Mwai Kibaki and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and added that the Commission did not belong to Jubilee as it was an independent commission.

The more than 20 MPs and senators were speaking at Kabarnet Stadium. Deputy President William Ruto was also present at the ceremony.
