Two morans injured in lion attack

Athi River, Kenya: Two Maasai morans are nursing wounds at a hospital in Athi River after a lion attacked them in Kajiado County.

The two were among others who had earlier killed a lion after it invaded their homestead.

The more than five lions also killed three cows and injured scores of others at Oldonye Sampu area last night.

However, the Kenya Wildlife Service reportedly arrested 12 residents after the incident.

This comes a week after the locals killed another lion when a pride invaded and killed one cow, 41 sheep and goats.

Combed area

Speaking from his hospital bed, one of the victims, Mr Moses Lemunanda, complained of serious injuries in the arms and legs.

Pastor Simon Parsaloi said more than six lions invaded a homestead and mauled three cows. In retaliation, the villagers killed one lion at the foot of Chillu hills. “It was around 3am when the four lions invaded a home and killed three cows. The morans chased the lions and managed to kill one,” he said.

On Tuesday, wardens from Tsavo West combed the area and arrested 12 residents, who were taken to Mtito Andei Police Station.

KWS spokesperson Paul Mbugua said they would be arraigned in court at Makindu.

“Our wardens from Tsavo West arrested 12 Maasai morans suspected to have hunted and killed a lion. They claimed the lions had killed their cattle,” said Mr Mbugua.

The KWS spokesman said locals should not attack the animals but should wait for compensation. But residents said they have suffered losses after raids without compensation.
