Raila pledges to push for local ICC trials

KENYA: Prime Minister Raila Odinga has reiterated the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) will seek to have the four Kenyans facing charges at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, tried at home.

He said a CORD government would petition the UN Security Council to have the Kenyans tried here to promote reconciliation and national cohesion. Addressing a rally at Kericho Green Stadium on Saturday, Raila said he was not an enemy with anyone adding he had forgiven those who had demonised and insulted him.

“We want to unite all Kenyans and avoid petty politics that have polarised the country along ethnic groups,” he said.

Noting the country was due for a major transformation after the General Election, the PM pledged jobs for the youth through reviving collapsed industries and creating others. He hit out at those calling on him to retire with President Kibaki, saying he had not accomplished his mission of bringing reforms.

“As one way of empowering the youth, a CORD government will train them on business skills, before giving grants to start their businesses, which they will then use as collateral for loans,” he said.

Raila also said those evicted from the Mau would be resettled in Rongai and Molo areas. Among those present were Trade Minister Moses Wetangula, who urged the electorate to vote for CORD saying it will implement the Constitution, while the Jubilee coalition roots for the status quo. Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo was also at the rally.
