Man seeks to have polls blocked

A man has moved to court seeking to have the next polls postponed on grounds that the electoral body was not ready for the exercise.

Mr Ali Wario Guyo expressed concern that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was not fully prepared to conduct elections slated for March 4 next year.

He argued it was four months to the polls and the registration of voters was yet to begin. Guyo said he was concerned that in view of the current state of affairs, a huge number of eligible voters would be locked out.

He wants a declaration issued that the polls be postponed to a suitable date to be determined by the court or otherwise to be determined.

He avers the March polls would violate his rights to vote and participate in democratic, free and fair elections.

The petitioner has, through his lawyer John Khaminwa, sued the Attorney General, Justice Ministry, IEBC and Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC).

He contends that with the late arrival of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits, there was no sufficient time for the same to be installed, train staff.
