Feuding revellers attack, injure three police officers

Three police officers are admitted to Busia County Referral Hospital after sustaining injuries following a confrontation with members of the public.

The officer in-charge of investigations in Nambale Constituency, Samuel Agutu, said the Administration Police officers attached to Tangakona AP Camp were on patrol on Thursday night when they heard people screaming in a bar in Tangakona market.

When they entered the bar, Mr Agutu said they found revellers fighting over a female attendant from Uganda.

“Police shot in the air to scare the revellers but they became rowdy and started pelting the officers with stones, inflicting them with serious injuries,” he said.

The attackers snatched the guns from the police and ran away. They later handed the rifles to a former police officer in Tangakona.

“The guns were recovered from the home of a former police officer while in good condition,” confirmed Agutu.

The Nambale DCIO said at least four suspects linked to the attack have been arrested.

“Police were only responding to the noise that was coming from the bar, but the revellers decided to attack them, we are going to take legal action,” the DCIO said.

Nambale OCPD Robert Ndambiri said at least four people were arrested. “The four have already recorded statement and investigation is still ongoing,” he said

The owner of the bar was also being sought to help police with investigations.

"It is illegal to attack police officers; why they launched an attack on our officers is what we are interested to know and culprits will face the full force of the law,” said Ndambiri.
