I'm too young to serve life sentence, says man

Geoffrey Akwari, who is in his 20s, has said he is “too young” to serve a life sentence.

Mr Akwari was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of robbery with violence.

Thursday, he appealed against the decision at the High Court in Kakamega, saying the punishment was severe.

“The witnesses against me did not tell the (lower) court how they identified me. More importantly, the investigating officer in this case never testified in court,” he told Justice Charles Kariuki.

Positively Identified

“There is also no proper record showing which police station I was booked at before being put on trial.”

He is accused that on May 23, 2014 while armed with crude weapons robbed Noah Jumba of a motorbike registration number KMDF 072X valued at Sh97,000. He also meted out violence to his victim.

Prosecutor Patrick Oroni said Akwari was rightly convicted after prosecution witnesses positively identified him.

“Witness testimony was not shaken at any instance. I support the conviction and object the appeal,” said Oroni.

Justice Kariuki will rule on the case on August 23, 2016.
