Baby burnt beyond recognition in Webuye town

A four-months-old baby boy was on Saturday burnt to death in their rental house in Soko Mjinga estate within Webuye town.

Narrating the traumatising incident, an eye witness Janet Nafula said that the fire was sparked by a mentally challenged child who had been left to take care of the child as the mother went to look for food.

She said that the child placed the lamp near the baby and went outside to unhang clothes. The lamp then fell down spilling paraffin which eventually caught fire.

“I was returning from the shop when I heard the children screaming for help and when I rushed I found the whole house engulfed in fire,” said the eye witness.

She said that the fire consumed all the household items including the child who was burnt beyond recognition as efforts by neighbours to put it off were fruitless.

Following the incident, residents have urged parents not to leave there children unattended, especially during evening hours.

The victim's body was taken to Webuye Sub County Hospital mortuary by officers from Webuye police station.
