CS Cleopa Mailu orders investigations into the KNH saga

Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu has instructed the management of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to beef up security measures to protect patients and their relatives.

The CS has also ordered investigations into the matter, saying the KNH management will provide a detailed report on the issue by Monday 22nd January 2018.

This is after reports emerged on social media, claiming new mothers were being raped by some of the KNH staff.

In a post that went viral on social media, new mothers complained of being sexually harassed by mortuary attendants as they went to breastfeed their newborns late in the night. According to the post and captured reactions, this was not the first time this happened, with responses showing the act had been going on for a while. The post also cautioned patients about thieves in the hospital corridors and queues.

One respondent said the attendants had a habit if scaring new mothers with dead bodies and later going on to rape them.

After a meeting with the hospital’s management, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDU) Secretary General Ouma Oluga said that they had seen some CCTV footage but haven’t seen anything in connection to the social media reports. He also said that patients should feel safe whenever admitted in hospital.
